a little sting

I just found out some news that really hurt my feelings…

What I thought was a pretty good friend of mine just had their 40th birthday at the end of October and I remember being surprised that there wasn’t a festive celebration, but I thought maybe they didn’t want to make a big deal about it. I, of course having the “affliction” of always remembering people’s birthdays, left my friend a peppy birthday message on the big day. A couple of days later I received a message from my friend saying, “Hey thank you so much for your birthday message…you were one of the only people besides my family who thought to call me.”

Well, tonight I went to a birthday party for a guy I only vaguely know. I was happily sitting at the bar chatting with a girlfriend of mine when she casually mentioned that she was surprised I hadn’t been at our friend’s 40th birthday party. I sat there, stunned. I had not been invited…

My sensitive little self is bruised by this news and I’m not quite sure how to take it.

  1. My god…

    It must be genetic.

    i understand.

i’ll bet your friend felt like a pile of crap when she got your message.

    good. she should.

    hehehe…

wanna come to my birthday party?

  2. well, the friend was a he

and i have since found out more details which help explain my not having been invited. my friend, unbeknownst to me, got back together with his girlfriend. and the birthday party was a suprise. so, i guess younger, single gal friends would naturally be omitted from the guest list…???

although i’m glad to know that it wasn’t specifically my friend who didn’t invite me, my feelings are still a little hurt that i was neither told about the girlfriend nor the birthday party.

oh well, yet another friend lost to coupledom…

  3. and thus, the pain which stems from the vagueries of association and intimacy through friendship.

    i understand.
