cool new city, cool new show

Well, I’ve been in Chicago now for about 1.5 days and I like it so very much. I already knew I liked Chicago ~ I came here during college for a post term study one summer, and of course, I’ve been here a couple of times now for work, but they were so short I couldn’t do anything but work and sleep.

I like how friendly strangers are here. And it feels so sincere.

I’m living in our corporate apartment and my favorite thing is that everyone talks to me in the elevator. They say hello and then “have a good day” upon exiting. And these people don’t know me, it’s just that we’re sharing an elevator in a place people call home. In the elevator in my condo building, where you’d think I might get to know people, my neighbors behave as if I’ve asked them to borrow a lot of money when I say hello in our elevator. They look at me with fear and I can see the momentary fight over how to respond to me. It’s so unfortunate. I like the Chicago elevator better.

And tonight I went out for a walk in the rain (cause we don’t get much of that in LA) and at the street corner, a man started to tease me about wearing a scarf. I admit, it probably wasn’t that cold, but I’m from LA, so everything feels cold and I told him so. He proceeded to tell me the history of the area for the next three blocks until he turned and went South and I went North. He had no agenda other than to talk to me while we shared the sidewalk.

My other favorite event of the evening occured just before it started to rain.

At the height of traffic I was sitting on my couch quietly, when all of a sudden, loud yelling, horn blowing and music raised up from the street below my balcony. I thought is might be some wild happy hour revelers, but it kept on longer than normal. I stepped outside into the crisp, chilly air and found a sea of bicycles flowing down Jefferson. It was critical mass. I haven’t seen a critical mass bicycle ride since I lived in San Francisco and this one made those attempts look paltry. This was huge and really shut down the traffic. I took these pictures…

I love a city with spirit!

After I returned from my happy walk in the rain (with a big bag of peanut butter m&ms), I watched all the episodes of the new show Pushing Daisies. And it’s my new favorite show. It’s fresh, fun and cleverly stylized. Me likey muchisimo!

You can watch it for free online or on Wednesday nights…

wild & free

wild

“I believe there is a force in this world that lives beneath the surface, something primitive and wild that awakens when you need an extra push just to survive. Like wildflowers that bloom after a fire turns the forest black. Most people are afraid of it and keep it buried deep inside themselves, but there will always be a few people who have the courage to love what is untamed inside us.”
{Flicka}

This movie turned me into a wet pile of tears. What is it about horse movies that makes me weep?

come away with me

A little while ago, in my desperate need to get away, but impossibility of it for the moment, I signed up to receive a “daily escape” from the away network. The cool thing is that the information is free and I’ve been keeping the trip ideas and tidbits about faraway places for future reference. Because I will explore the world again at some point!

Here are some of the places I’ve visited virtually and plan to someday visit in person…

At Rest

I returned from Houston exhausted. The deep well of my movement knowledge was drained to the last drop. I was itching from my neck to my ankles with some kind of stress rash. (Or was it something from the room I’d been cooped up in for a month?) Either way, it wasn’t pretty, or comfortable. I crash landed back to work on Monday, where all the fears and frustrations I’d been experiencing were slowly becoming apparent to the others around me…

Then, my rhomboid muscle flared up again. I was tired to the core last night when I fell into bed.

But, I awoke this morning after a long, deep sleep to find that my skin felt better and I felt ‘perky’.

I returned to my Wednesday night ‘girls’ this evening and fell right back in sync with them. I taught from my heart and felt refreshed and lovely afterward.

Good things came out of my time away…
I was challenged and the work I was doing was not easy. I am a little stronger. I am humbled. And I am more in love with everything familiar.

tag…you’re it

I was tagged by Miss Erica, so…

Here’s how you play. Once you’ve been tagged, you write a blog with 10 weird, random things, facts or habits about yourself. At the end you choose 10 people to be tagged, listing their names and why you chose them to be tagged. Don’t forget to leave them a comment “You’re It!” and to read your blog. You can’t tag the person who tagged you…

1. If I’ve ever told you that I was allergic to fish, I was lying. The truth is that I have a terrible psychological block toward eating anything that came from a body of water. So, sorry about that. I just sometimes find it easier to say I’m allergic than to go through the whole ordeal of people trying to talk me into it. I’ll cry, you know. (haha)

2. When I was in grad school I would sometimes buy cheap new underwear at Ross Dress for Less instead of doing laundry.

3. I have rather crooked fingers.

4. Because of #4, I used to hold my hands in fists or under tables to hide them.

5. I kind of, really like Taco Bell. Ok!? And no, I don’t consider Taco Bell Mexican food.

6. I don’t really like to drive, but I love to ride in the car.

7. When I was being ‘interviewed’ for Kindergarten, they asked me what my father did and I said, “He takes care of chickens”. He’s really a psychiatrist, but what I actually saw him do was take care of our chickens.

8. In that same interview, my response to ‘what do you see on a rainy day?’ was “Rainbows”.

9. I secretly wish I’d had the guts to move to New York. (but it’s not a secret anymore, is it?)

10. My least favorite chore is mopping the floor.
