good audition.

Last night I had an audition. About an hour before I was to leave I decided I did not want to go. I didn’t feel like putting on my make-up, doing my hair, doing a monologue or driving in the traffic across all of Hollywoodland during rush hour.

BUT, my actor survival instinct kicked in and I peeled myself off the couch, into the shower, in front of the mirror and into the car. I was pleased to find that the traffic, while not speeding along at 75mph, wasn’t all that bad. I arrived in downtown LA (which leaves something to be desired), parked and entered the building. I had been warned by the director to “not be afraid of the building”. I walked up to it and was let in by a nice doorman who pointed me in the direction of the elevators. I rode the funky elevator up eight floors and was reminded of many live/work artist buildings in San Francisco. When I arrived in the room where the audition was held I was greeted by 2 very nice people. One was the director, Christine and another guy, whose name escapes me now. She told me she hoped I wasn’t too freaked out by the building…

Me (nostalgically): “NO! It actually reminds me of San Francisco.”

Her: “Yeah! I’m from San Francisco. I think that too.”

Me: “Oh yeah? I’m from San Francisco!”

Her: “Oh yay. I’m glad another SFriscan agrees with me…”

Cool. We’re connecting. we have something in common. (I think to myself)
She is a graduate film student at CalArts and is casting the short film version of a film she’d like to produce as a feature. She told about the story of the film and where she came up with it and she happens to mention she’s a big fan of House music. (Wow!)

Me: “I love house music too. Good house music.”

Her: “Yeah, it has to be the good stuff.”

Me: “Do you like Dubtribe?”

Her: (pause) “Yeah! A lot! We listen to that a lot.”

Me (shyly): “Well, that’s my brother…and my sister-in-law.”

Her: “Whoa. Really?”

Me: nod, nod, nod

Her: “What’s his name again?”

Me: “Sunshine”

Her: “Wow. That’s cool! I can say I met Sunshine’s sister”

Me: giggle

I went on to do my monologue for them, which they both said they thought was a great piece. And then I did it again with an adjustment she gave me. Overall it felt like a great audition…whether I get the role or not. (But I’d love to work with a cool, female, Dubtribe lovin’, San Franciso transplanted director)

It just goes to show me…the more often I peel myself off the couch, I might just meet someone cool and gain back some of my much needed confidence.

Every woman has a story
It’s not how you tell it
It’s how you live it!

  1. Ahhh…

    my sweet, tender, talented sister.

    i love you!

this just warms my heart like a bonfire on the beach.

it reminds me of something i need to remember tonight:
I am not what i feel
I am not what i hope for
    I am not my plans
    I am not my intentions

I am, only, what i do.

    kick ass mama! you rock!

    love,
    Sunshine
